A.C. White Relocations

A.C. White, a family-owned moving company based in Atlanta, traces its roots back to 1926 when A.C. White Sr. initiated operations with a pickup truck in Marietta, Georgia. Shortly after, he relocated the business to Atlanta, setting up a modest office in the back of a barber shop and acquiring a new 1926 Chevrolet open truck. The company’s early growth saw the construction of its first van bodies in a blacksmith’s shop in Blackwell, GA, during 1929 and 1930. Notably, Dorothy White DeMay, the eldest daughter, lettered the first van at the age of 13 in 1929, while A.C. White Jr. embarked on a three-week journey to New York in a 1930 Chevrolet at the age of 10, albeit without doors or body lights, relying on lanterns during dark hours.

By 1941, A.C. White had evolved from its humble beginnings with one truck to become one of the largest moving companies in the southern United States, boasting a workforce of 40 individuals and multiple offices extending as far as Washington, D.C., and New York City. However, the onset of World War II necessitated significant changes. With many personnel joining the war effort, the company experienced a drastic downsizing, closing offices in major cities, selling warehouses and long-haul equipment. A.C. White Jr. enlisted in the Navy in 1943, while operations were scaled back to Georgia, where the company maintained four trucks, two warehouses, and diversified into furniture retail and real estate under the guidance of A.C. White Sr.
